유리잔은 열에 녹는다는 것,

물은 냉기에 언다는 것,

이는 이 물체가 그저 하나의 상태임을,

두 극 사이의 수많은 상태들 가운데 하나임을 보여준다. 그런 식으로,

형이상학의 세계에도 이러한 두 극이 존재한다.

 

여기 한가운데 유리잔이 서 있다. 빛은

물 마시러 내려오는 사자. 거기서

그리고 그러한 상태에서, 유리잔은 물웅덩이다.

빛의 눈은 붉고 빛의 발톱은 붉다

그가 거품 묻은 턱에 물을 적시러 내려올 때

 

그리고 물속에서 구불구불한 풀들은 원을 그린다.

그리고 거기 그리고 또 다른 상태 속에서―굴절들,

형이상학, 시(詩)들의 플라스틱 부품들이

의식 속에서 충돌한다― 그러나 살찐 요쿤두스, 여기 한가운데

유리잔이 아닌, 무엇이 서 있는지에 대해 고심하는,

 

그러나 이날, 이 시간, 우리의 삶 한가운데에서

그것은 하나의 상태다, 카드 게임 하는 정치가들에 둘러싸인

이 봄. 한 원주민 마을에서,

The Glass of Water

That the glass would melt in heat,

That the water would freeze in cold,

Shows that this object is merely a state,

One of many, between two poles. So,

In the metaphysical, there are these poles.

 

Here in the centre stands the glass. Light

Is the lion that comes down to drink. There

And in that state, the glass is a pool.

Ruddy are his eyes and ruddy are his claws

When light comes down to wet his frothy jaws

 

And in the water winding weeds move round.

And there and in another state–the refractions,

The metaphysica, the plastic parts of poems

Crash in the mind–But, fat Jocundus, worrying

About what stands here in the centre, not the glass,

 

But in the centre of our lives, this time, this day,

It is a state, this spring among the politicians

Playing cards. In a village of the indigenes,

One would have still to discover. Among the dogs and dung,

One would continue to contend with one's ideas.
